If you’re keen to start a business, you can attend a free interactive workshop to learn about the nuts and bolts of starting and running a business, including: business planning, marketing, sales, raising capital, budgeting and tax. It could even land you a Level 1 Award in Exploring Enterprise.

The Prince’s Trust is running a 4-day Explore Enterprise Course from 23rd-26th February in Hammersmith (other dates also available). Afterwards, you can receive up to 3 years of support from a business mentor and apply for a loan with us.

Are you available Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays between 3.45-6.30pm during school term time?

Come and join an enthusiastic team of volunteers who are passionate about books and helping children to love story time, and have lots of fun along the way!

 

Doorstep Library visits families on estates in Hammersmith & Fulham. Each project recruits volunteers to pay weekly visits to families in disadvantaged areas to read stories to their children and bring a choice of children books to borrow.

Volunteers work in pairs, with each pair picking appropriate books. We visit families in their homes/ on their doorsteps, read a story with the children and lend them books for the week. Through the reading of stories to the children we also act to befriend parents/ carers, offering a listening ear and signposting suitable local services where appropriate.

All Volunteers receive initial and on-going training and support throughout the placement.

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (in partnership with Western Riverside Waste Authority) is offering cash prizes of up to £2500 to community groups who pledge to increase recycling among their members and local communities.

The Council has drawn up a list of pledges that groups can sign up to. You must make two pledges to earn a Golden Ticket to enter the prize draw. If you make more pledges, you can earn extra entries.
Once you have signed up, the Council’s waste team will contact you about your pledges and confirm your entry into the next draw.

Residents back Hammersmith and Fulham’s Air Quality Commission and share their experiences of air pollution

 

 

Evidence has been pouring into the council’s resident-led commission to tackle air pollution in the borough.

There is still time to have your say and join the many who have shared their views. Residents can submit evidence (details below) until 2 February.

“Air pollution is a silent killer and we’re determined to tackle the problem in Hammersmith & Fulham,” said H&F Council Leader Stephen Cowan.

“This resident-led commission will gather the evidence needed to help everyone in H&F breath cleaner air.”

Commenting on H&F Council’s website, residents have already pointed out ways in which the problem could be tackled.

“A laudable initiative and I wish it success”, said Anthony Lambert. “London’s air quality is a disgrace. Obviously diesel engines are avoidable vehicle use and largely to blame.”

Other residents gave accounts of how air pollution affects their own health.

“As an acute asthmatic I am very well aware of the deteriorating air quality. I notice this particularly when traffic is heavy,” said R Dennistoun. “I am certain we can afford to do more to prevent or at least ameliorate these sources of pollution.”

Rudi said: “I have noticed when walking along New Kings Road, Wandsworth Bridge Road and Fulham Road during main traffic hours, myself and others find breathing difficult and one gets an unpleasant sensation in the airways and lungs, coughs and feels generally unwell.”

Their views are shared by many people who have been submitting evidence to the Air Quality Commission, led by Hammersmith resident Rosemary Pettit. It will report back later this year but first needs to gather evidence, aided by experts as well as the general public. Click here for more details.

Voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations will have the ability to improve their performance and sustainability, thanks to two new online tools supported by the Big Lottery Fund. Learning from both will be evaluated to share with the sector.

The first has been developed with the Cabinet Office following the success of the VCSE diagnostic tool used for the Local Sustainability Fund, administered by the Big Lottery Fund. From 1 February, the VCSE Strength Checker can be used for free by organisations across the UK wishing to develop and improve their resilience.

It will produce a personalised report highlighting an organisation’s key strengths and areas to help them become more effective, including sustainability, marketing, strategy and planning, track record, quality and impact. The Big Lottery Fund will continue to work with the Cabinet Office to promote the tool and look for opportunities for development.

Organisations will also be sign posted to other sources of support and funding including social investment. Information generated through the report could also help organisations in planning funding bids to trusts and foundations. It is expected that it will be predominantly used by small-to-medium organisations but can also be used by larger VCSEs.

Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson, said: “This new tool will strengthen the sector by helping small and medium sized VCSEs adapt and access the resources they need, helping us build a stronger society with compassion at its heart.”

There will also be in-depth support specifically for third sector organisations in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Chief Officers Third Sector (CO3) and Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO) have received a grant of £358,810 for a new project that will work with 100 third sector organisations in Northern Ireland and Scotland to help them better understand and strengthen their capacity.

Joe Ferns, Big Lottery Fund UK Knowledge and Portfolio Director said: “The UK VCSE sector is already seeing the benefits of online capability support like diagnostic tools. They help organisations understand their strengths and areas for improvement so they can make the best of their funding. This is a fast-evolving area and we will be listening to organisations so that we can learn what works for them, and what doesn’t. This means we, other funders and the sector as a whole can constantly adapt to meet the needs of organisations today and in the future.”

The Path to Impact project will use the online diagnostic Core Capacity Assessment Tool (CCAT) to help the groups to better understand their strengths and areas for development, allow support providers and funders to deliver more targeted support, and provide a comparative dataset on the capacity of the NI and Scotland VCSE sectors for the first time.

The project will also run workshops and one to one support for the groups that take part to help them understand and address the findings of the assessment, and share learning within the sector.

Nora Smith, Chief Executive CO3 said: “The third sector broadly understood as the vast array of charities, voluntary organisations, community groups and social enterprises is undergoing a huge transformative process. Part of the challenge is understanding the capacity needs of their organisations, their areas of strength, and what support the leaders and their organisations need. We want to ensure that through the CCAT assessment third sector organisations will be better informed and gain a clear understanding of the forces at play to help them become more sustainable in the future.”

Pat Armstrong, CEO ACOSVO said: “Path to Impact offers an exciting opportunity for third sector leaders to increase the effectiveness of their own organisations and make a valuable contribution to developing the capacity and sustainability of the sector as a whole.”

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and deliver a pioneering new service called ‘Learn Well’ that supports pupils, teachers and parents in secondary schools to effectively manage their mental health and crucially prevent mental health problems from developing at a young age. The Learn Well programme will aim to improve young people’s (11 to 18) psychological wellbeing by building resilience, promoting positive practices, adaptive coping skills and raising awareness of how to get help if their mental health deteriorates.

We’re looking for a unique person who has experience in mental health and delivering engaging programmes and/or training with young people. We are actively working on expanding our Learn Well programme into more secondary schools so there is the potential for this to move towards a full time role in the near future.

Are you interested in training as a bereavement volunteer on the Cruse Awareness in Bereavement Care course? This 48-hour course in April and May is open to anyone who feels they are interested in this special and rewarding work.

 

Who can apply?

You do not need prior training or experience in counselling but interest in this particular area through personal experience is helpful.The ability to listen, show empathy and understanding is essential.We will give preference to qualified applicants who live in our local community, which is Kensington, Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham.
