Join us for our new series of Free DSC Zoom Talks – an opportunity to get together for an honest discussion of the topical issues facing our sector today.

Next up is Giving yourself the edge. Our fantastic panel will be giving tips and tricks on job hunting in the charity sector both internally and externally, including how to give yourself the edge, interviewing skills and some essential do’s and don’ts. Wednesday 25 November between 17.00-18.00 is the date and time to have in your diary. Sign up here.

This will be followed two weeks later by Racism: Not in our sector? (Part 2). The recent backlash on Twitter following Barnardo’s guidance on understanding white privilege with your children and the issues of racism and inequality we are seeing in our government today has left us questioning: is it getting worse? And as a charity sector: what can we do? This talk is taking place between 17.00-18.00 on Wednesday 9 December. Sign up here.

All you need to do to get involved is post a photo and text about what your volunteers do (or indeed if you yourself volunteer) with #NotJustVolunteering on social media. Check out their example here now and get involved.

The Thrive LDN communications toolkit remains updated and the messages and assets will support partners during the remaining planned period of the current national lockdown for signposting to resources to support resilience, mental health and wellbeing. It is available to download via: https://thriveldn.co.uk/toolkits/.

There is suggested standard copy for your own external facing websites within this. Please do explore this and see how it may be used, for example as a news article, if not already the case. We have updated some key messages for digital channels. Download here.

You’ll note some specific resilience messaging has been added to this.  We’re developing this further, in partnership with Good Thinking, and will update with more assets as an ongoing campaign over the winter period. Please feel free to use and post organically or reshare posts through the Thrive LDN accounts, all via @ThriveLDN.

FURTHER UPDATES…

  • Guidance for people supporting individuals and communities affected by the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19)

Thank you to colleagues who are sharing and download a Look, Listen, Link A4 poster for your community or faith centre, public and patient area, and/or workplace.

This poster links to our guidance for people who are supporting communities and individuals who have been adversely affected by COVID-19 to help them to know the most supportive things to say and do for people who are distressed.

  • Good Thinking’s toolkit for employers

Good Thinking has published an online toolkit on how best to support your employees’ mental health – designed for organisations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. It is available to support your internal communications activity and will be updated regularly by the Good Thinking team.

  • Support after sudden bereavement during the pandemic

We are finalising with partners a toolkit to help provide suddenly bereaved people with reassurance that help is available if they need it. We anticipate being able to publish this by the end of this week.

It provides important London wide information about how existing services have changed how they are supporting people. We have included dedicated support options for groups of people who may be particularly vulnerable, to help ensure they are aware of who can best understand their circumstances. We think it will be an important resource for both internal and external use.

Covid has brought property right up to the top of the agenda for charities, and has highlighted in many cases the need for a fundamental shift in how they use and occupy land. This also has implications for what charities should be looking at in respect of their existing premises.

This virtual roundtable on Thursday 26 November, 11:00 – 12:30 will be chaired by partner Andrew Small of Russell-Cooke with Dr. Peter Damesick, Chair and Antonia Swinson CEO of The Ethical Property Foundation and Catherine Flexer, associate from Russell-Cooke. The discussion will explore these topics in light of the results from the ‘2020 Charity Property Matters surveyed’, conducted by EPF and sponsored by Russell-Cook

  • Do charities still need offices for all their staff? (where the property is used only as an office, as almost 50% are)?
  • If they do, is CV19 an opportunity with so many properties being left empty and favourable terms being offered?
  • Almost 50% of the charities surveyed are based in London – is this still necessary with all the expenses that involves?
  • Do charities have the expertise and capacity to make these decisions? How to boost that capacity?
  • The cost of compliance. What needs to be done to existing premises to make them Covid secure and to meet ever more stringent environmental requirements? Who does that work and who pays for it?
  • What can charities do to get rid of excess space.

This meeting will be an interactive session. You will be virtually introduced to the speakers and have the opportunity to ask questions. If you would like to submit questions ahead of the meeting, feel free to email us.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asda Foundation has created the Feeding Communities Grant Scheme to provide meals for those in need in the run up to Christmas. Charities, community interest companies, unincorporated clubs or associations, and other not-for-profit organisations across the UK can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to provide meals costing £4 or less for individuals, families, and children’s healthy holiday clubs. Funding could be used to provide food parcels, Christmas meal delivery or collection, and Christmas hampers, or provide support for soup kitchens/homeless centres, and local community centres providing meal deliveries. Applications should be made through each local Asda store’s Community Champion whose role is to support projects. The deadline for applications is the 6th December 2020. Click here

London Community Response has announced that grants of up to £10,000 are now available to help groups to support Londoners affected by covid-19 over the winter months. For this funding round, priority will be given to organisations that are led by and for marginalised communities; that are trusted by people at high risk of negative impacts from covid-19; and groups that have a turnover of less than £1m a year. The funding will be available to both support people affected by Covid-19 as well as strengthening and supporting civil society organisations delivering essential services. To be eligible for funding activities must take place in and/or benefit people living in London or one or more of London’s 33 local authority areas. National organisations can apply but clearly show in their application how their proposed activities will benefit Londoners. Applications will be assessed on a first-come-first-served basis, with with a final deadline on the 3rd December 2020. Click here
