How can digital technologies help to provide community dementia support and reduce loneliness?

The COVID-19 pandemic was particularly hard on people living with dementia as lockdown stripped away the routines and family and community support they rely on. Community dementia support groups had to adapt quickly to use digital technologies to re-engage and support people in their homes in creative ways tailored to the specific needs of people living with dementia and their carers.

To develop new hybrid approaches for supporting people living with dementia in the community and helping them live safely in their own homes, the London Office Technology and Innovation and the Helix Centre (part of the UK Dementia Research Institute Care Research & Technology Centre at Imperial College London) undertook a London-wide project to co-design and pilot new ways to provide community dementia support. Although this project focused on the needs of people living with dementia, it has the potential to inform and impact community support for other groups in a post-COVID society.

To enable other organisations to undertake similar initiatives, the Helix Centre has developed an easy-to-use toolkit capturing the learning and resources for each of the project phases.

@PeopleAriseNow  will be hosting their Community Connect event., focusing on “How Safe do you feel?”.

Date: Tuesday 29th  November

Time: 11am – 1pm

Location: Sobus, 20 Dawes Road, SW6 7EN.

Do you have lived experience of the criminal justice system? Do you have the potential to be a leader for change?

We are delighted to announce that the Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA)’s lived experience leadership programme, ELEVATE CJS, has opened applications to attend the ELEVATE CJS Taster Day 2022. Attendance is not essential to apply to be part of the ELEVATE CJS 2023 cohort, however it is an invaluable opportunity for potential emerging leaders to learn more about the programme.

 About ELEVATE CJS

The Criminal Justice Alliance is piloting ELEVATE CJS, a comprehensive twelve-month leadership programme that promotes the redistribution of power to people with lived experience of the criminal justice system.

The programme aims to dismantle the barriers of stigma and tokenism, which prevent emerging leaders who are working in the sector from progressing to positions of power and influence.

Through personal and professional development training, the programme will equip individuals with the skills, knowledge, and networks to advance systemic change, challenging the criminal justice sector to reimagine who can be a leader.

ELEVATE CJS runs from January to December. The first cohort will begin the programme in January 2023.

Read more about ELEVATE CJS, and sign up to be first to hear when applications open for the 2023 cohort, here.

About the ELEVATE CJS Taster Day

The ELEVATE CJS Taster Day is an opportunity for people who may apply to be part of the 2023 cohort to find out more about the ELEVATE CJS Leadership Programme. Attending the ELEVATE CJS Taster Day 2022 is not essential for applications to be part of the ELEVATE CJS 2023 cohort.

The Taster Day is taking place in Central London. Successful applicants will receive an invitation by email in the coming weeks, with details about the venue.

World Suicide Prevention Day and the theme Creating Hope through Action, North West London Suicide Prevention Programme will be exploring barriers to accessing support for people bereaved by suicide with a hybrid event.

“When you lose someone to suicide, the grief that you experience can be very intense and the emotions you feel can differ from the grief you experience following any other kind of death.” Samaritans recognises that those who are bereaved by suicide are a particularly vulnerable group who need support.

This topic is linked in with World Suicide Prevention Day because those bereaved by suicide are a group at risk and often overlooked.

  • Mo from Inquest will set the scene for our panel by speaking to the institutional response families have to contend with after a suicide and the complexities of seeking support.
  • A representative from The Met will share current responses and challenges faced in signposting to bereavement services.
  • Ben from The New Normal Charity will discuss the stigma and taboos associated with mental health, with a focus on men.
  • John from SoBS will round off the panel by sharing his lived experience and highlighting the difficulties navigating bereavement support after a suicide.

The panel will be followed by a Q+A session.

Helen from MIND will discuss signposting. Every attendee will be receiving a London-specific signposting pack for bereavement support following a suicide.
