About Small Charity Week

Small Charity Week is a campaign which was first established by the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) in 2010 to celebrate and raise the profile of the small charity sector.

The week is organised as a series of activities and initiatives to support and raise awareness of the hundreds and thousands of small charities that, every day, make a huge difference to vulnerable communities right across the UK and the rest of the world.

The objectives of Small Charity Week are to:

  • Celebrate the contribution that small charities make to communities throughout the UK and across the world
  • Improve the knowledge, representation and sustainability of small charities
  • Highlight the work of the small charity sector to the broadest possible audience
  • Encourage public giving
  • Work with the small charity sector to develop political engagement at a national and local level

We are shocked and saddened at the tragic fatal stabbing in West Kensington last week of Ayub Hassan, a 17 year old local resident.   Ayub’s friends, family and community are understandably reeling from this horrific incident.  The police are reaching out to local communities to ask what support is needed, and they are obviously the first point of contact if you have any information that might assist their enquiries, but Sobus would also be glad to provide whatever support we can to help you and the communities you work with, through this very difficult time.

Knife crime and gang culture is clearly a huge issue affecting communities up and down the country, with last week’s horrific news planting this issue very firmly on our doorstep.  While lots of organisations are working incredibly hard to tackle the problem, clearly more needs to be done on both a national, regional and local level and it is likely that in the coming weeks and months, we will come together to explore how we, as individuals, organisations and a community, can work together on this.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to this young man’s family, friends and community.  It is hard to imagine the devastation and grief that they must now endure.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 or contact via Twitter @MetCC quoting CAD 4136/07MAR.

To give information anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.”

The Group is affiliated to Diabetes UK and sponsored by Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. It comprises Type 1s and Type 2s, both newly diagnosed and those with many years of experience, together with partners, other family members, friends and carers. Membership is drawn from Fulham, Hammersmith and the surrounding areas.

The purpose of the Group is both educational and to provide a place where you can meet other people with diabetes and share experiences. The Group meets 8 times a year. The 2019 programme is set out on the next page. There is an informal talk on a specialist subject from a wide and exciting panel of speakers with lively questions and discussion.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is investing in a community-led redesign of North End Road in Fulham – and would love to know what you think.

Since 2014, the council has been working hard with businesses, traders and residents to improve North End Road as a thriving retail and food destination.

And now it is ready to move to the next stage.

“We want to do things with residents and businesses, not to them,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for the Economy and the Arts. “This is why we’re asking local people and businesses to share their ideas and suggestions on how we can improve North End Road to live and work in and visit – all part of our plan to make H&F the best place to live, work and play in Europe.”

Complete the online survey here: Tell us what you think

Survey closes on Friday 22 February

Give your views directly
H&F Council has already been talking to shopkeepers, market traders, community representatives and local community groups.

Based on what they said, the council is putting together an initial wish list of possible future improvements. Some of these will be small and quick, others will be long-term projects which need more investment.

All residents are invited to view and give their opinions on the wish list on 8 February (from 2pm to 6pm) and 9 February (from 10am to 2pm) at St John’s Church, North End Road, Fulham (Click Here for a map)

Based on the responses to this and the online questionnaire, the council will come up with a plan for the way forward, which will involve further consultation.

I am chairing an independent commission, set up by H&F Council, looking at policing and crime in Hammersmith and Fulham.  We are presently at the evidence gathering stage and want to hear your views on what we should be focussing on over the coming months before we report back to the Council and the Police with recommendations for action.

A ‘call for written evidence’ is a request for views, opinions and research that can help to inform a commission’s discussions and deliberations, and its conclusions and recommendations at the end of the evidence gathering process.

What the commission wants to know is what most concerns residents and organisations about crime and policing in the borough and why.  What is your experience of crime and policing and what do you think needs to be done to tackle it in H&F?

This is the link to the article announcing the launch of the Commission on the H&F website:

https://www.lbhf.gov.uk/articles/news/2018/12/independent-resident-led-policing-and-crime-commission-begins

If you want to submit written evidence to the Commission, please send an email to monica.roucou@lbhf.gov.uk

setting out your views, opinions and/or any research that you think will assist the Commission by 10 February. Your submission for evidence is important to us, as we want to take a holistic and comprehensive approach to tackle crime in our borough.

Kind regards,
Adam Matan OBE

Being an informed and active citizen is empowering and can benefit our whole society. The more people who participate in our democracy, the fairer and more equal it will be.

Knowing your rights as a citizen, and being aware of the ways you can influence decisions, is key to having the confidence to make change happen in your community. We believe that every young person should be aware of how democracy works and how they can participate in it. Everyone regardless of background, gender, race or age should have their say.

That’s why we’ve launched the Democracy Ambassadors programme with the hope of spreading this important message to tens of thousands of young people. Download our leaflet to find out more.

We will be training and supporting 1,000 Democracy Ambassadors aged 13–16* through the adults who support them to better understand our democracy and how they can influence change. These Ambassadors will then be challenged to share their learning and insight with other young people across England, creating a step change in youth participation.

The programme is being funded by the Cabinet Office until March 2019, as part of the Government’s Suffrage Centenary Fund.

Come and make our Borough even better for disabled people to live and work in.

This is an invitation to Disabled residents of Hammersmith & Fulham to apply to join the Hammersmith and Fulham Co-production (working together) Implementation Group (HFCIG).

The group will make sure that the recommendations set out in the Hammersmith and Fulham Disabled People’s Commission report, are put into place.  The Council Cabinet approved this report on December 4th, 2017.

The Commission looked at the many barriers still faced by Disabled residents in their day to day lives and made recommendations to change those experiences.

Do you believe that people should be at the heart of the way our health and care system is designed and delivered?

At Healthwatch Central West London we have three local committees that represent the boroughs we work in.

They provide the link between local people and community members with the board, as well as a way of ensuring that Healthwatch is responsive to local issues and that our work plan is co-produced.

This year we became an independent organisation and therefore need to hold elections for local committee members. To find out more about what this role involves and the process of being elected, please click more information.

More Information

If you are already a local committee member, or wish to become one, you will need to complete an application form by the 9th September. To find out more, please click on apply.

If you need any help while completeting your application, or would like further information, please email info@healthwatchcentralwestlondon.org

Young Healthwatch Westminster

This year we will be focusing on capturing the views of young people in Westminster.

To do this we will be setting up a Young Healthwath Westminster. This will be a group of young people who share their views and experiences of healthcare in the borough, and use this feedback to help shape the services they use.

How to get involved?

If you’re between 14 – 25, use health or social care services in Westminster, and would like to have a say in how local healthcare services are run, please get in touch.

If you know someone who might be interested, please let them know about our new project.

You can find out more about Young Healthwatch and the benefits of joining by clicking ‘find out more’ below.
