Globally there is thought to be poor understanding and a great deal of stigma surrounding dementia, so the work of World Alzheimer’s Month is vital and is growing and targeting the stigma and lack of understanding and knowledge surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and dementia as well as supporting those suffering with the disease.The month is an opportunity for individuals, businesses and charities to hold events and raise awareness in their communities of the effects of dementia. Participants can get campaign materials for their event from ADI, and anyone unable to arrange their own event but keen to take part, can find events run by their National Alzheimer’s Charity and participate in those. Community groups in H&F are being encouraged to apply for grants for schemes to help get more people cycling. Transport for London’s Cycling Grants programme, now in its fourth year, helps groups who are traditionally under-represented in cycling, to get pedalling. The scheme is managed by Groundwork London and this year has £240,000 available to help up to 30 groups deliver new cycling initiatives. These can be anything from courses teaching basic cycle maintenance, to guided rides and more. Projects will receive up to £10,000 over three years. Applications now open at www.cyclinggrants.london and close on 17 September. Free – OCN Level 1 Accredited – Employability and Volunteer Programme OCN accredited level 1 Employability and Volunteering programme – Learn2Earn. Learn2Earn has been devised to benefit the residents of the City of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham who are finding it difficult access employment and volunteering opportunities. Learn2Earn is an initiative funded by the Big Lottery and run in partnership by Blenheim CDP and the Octavia Foundation. Learn2Earn is accessible to all residents across the three boroughs who over the age of 18 and helps participants to build on existing skills as well as developing new ones. The programme aims to improve confidence, self-esteem and core skills, whilst encouraging people to take ownership over the next steps in their journey towards being a volunteer and/or employment ready. Homeless charity Restart, which offers drop-in, employability and mentoring services, is looking for a partner. Restart offers a volunteer pool, mentoring training and management system and a unique employability service which matches clients to a diverse range of host partners to build key personal and professional skills. Restart has 10 years’ experience in the area. The ideal partner would be an organisation who have a new or existing space to offer a drop-in and meals to homeless clients as a way to introduce rehabilitation programmes. Restart would welcome their partner’s resources to complement their own work and they must share their values of inclusion, commitment, collaboration and co-production. They have been primarily working in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea but their links would be ideal for anywhere in Central or West London. A huge thanks to all of our funders, sponsors, venues, artists, audiences and volunteers for making this year’s HF ArtsFest the biggest and best yet! To date, our statistics reveal that in the 9 days of the Festival there were over 800 artists taking part with over 10,000 audience numbers. We also managed to post 79,000 of our printed programme through the letterboxes of every household in the borough! The launch of ‘JOY’ at the Lyric was a huge success and our thanks go to Turtle Key Arts for delivering this fantastic programme. Congratulations to all! These coding course start in September. We have decided to extend the catchment to include those living, working and studying in North Kensington, plus any individuals who live slightly outside North Kensington but are interested in the course (applications will be considered on a case by case basis). We have also extended the deadline for applying to the course to 17th August. Hopefully this will encourage a wider group to attend the taster session and consider applying for the course.
