Explore Chemical Catalysts and see some amazing reactions with our Imperial Researcher Richard Kong.
About this Event
From the food we eat to the air we breathe, we all rely on chemical reactions, but some of these reactions need a helping hand. This is where our researchers look to catalysts, materials that help reactions happen!
In this workshop you will learn about the basics of chemical bonds through some exciting demonstrations delivered by Imperial researcher Richard Kong, before learning more about Imperial’s work developing new catalysts and why they are so important.
After picking the chemical reaction of your choice (perhaps turning carbon dioxide into diamonds or breaking down plastic) you will learn about the features of catalysts by making a catalyst monster. At the end of the workshop, we shall look at some real catalysts on the large screen and compare them to our own.

Could you be the Opening Doors Volunteer Coordinator for the next two years?

Are you looking for a change and a challenge working with volunteers to deliver sporting and arts’ activities for people with learning disabilities?

Opening Doors is Yarrow’s volunteer project funded by City Bridge Trust, supporting people with learning disabilities to access art, sport and cultural activities in London by matching them with volunteers with shared interests.

The project has been running for three years and has just been awarded a grant to continue for a further two years. Last year Opening Doors delivered a staggering 391 activities for people with learning disabilities. The range of activities was enormous, everything from rock climbing to supper clubs, film making to theatre trips, badminton to rugby!

Opening Doors is all about making sure that people with learning disabilities take a full and active part in their community and try lots of new and exciting activities. It’s about empowering people with learning disabilities, increasing confidence, widening social networks improving wellbeing. The project is open to people with learning disabilities across London, not just Yarrow people, so Opening Doors’ potential to expand is huge.

The new 2-year funding also provides for an Opening Doors website to help us reach our target of providing 400 opportunities and activities this year for people with learning disabilities.

It will be an exciting, challenging and very busy two years. It will also be great fun!

Youth Mental Health First Aid Workshops Information

Mental health is just as important to our overall wellbeing as physical health, in some cases more so, yet we tend to pay far less attention to it. The mental health of young people is particularly important. Half of all long-term mental illness in adulthood starts by 15 and three quarters by 18.

Youth workers and coaches can do a great deal to prevent this, without being experts. We train to give physical first aid without hesitation – so why not mental first aid too?

Local authorities up and down the country see mental health as their top priority. They know that ignoring the problem is unaffordable because of the impact on the economy: young people with mental health problems find it harder to get or stay in work, they are more likely to get into legal trouble and will need more attention from their GP or hospital. Interventions, such as Mental Health First Aid, are both evidence-based and cost-effective.

Training your volunteers and coaches is money well spent and will allow your organisation to make a vital contribution to the health of the local population.

What Is It About?

Learners will explore the most common mental health conditions experienced by young people and discover what youth and sport workers can do to prevent and/or intervene when needed.  The ‘Lite’ version provides a taster of the content for the ‘Full’ course.  Learners on the full course cover topics such as child and adolescent development, bullying and cyber bullying, substance misuse and protective factors.

Learners will be able to:

  • challenge the discrimination surrounding mental health
  • define mental health & common issues
  • relate to other people’s experiences
  • look after their own mental health
  • protect a young person who may be at risk
  • spot the signs of mental health issues in young people
  • give help, support and guidance to any young person who needs it

Crowdfunding: Ride Side-by-Side

The History of Bikeworks

In its short history Bikeworks has already achieved a significant amount making a positive difference to the lives of many thousands of people, winning numerous awards and expanding the reach of its work outside of East London.

Who will it effect:

Participants over 60 who have an issue with mobility, social isolation, or be visually impairment.

How it Works

People will book a trip by phone. A rider will pick them up, riding a side by side cycle and take them on a trip of their choice for an hour and half.

Why it’s a great idea:

Ride Side-by-Side will tackle loneliness and isolation. People will have an opportunity to chat with their co-rider (Pilot), interact, tell stories about themselves and reminisce.

Ride Side-by-Side will help people with things they need to do like shopping, visit friends and family, explore the borough or get to an appointment.

It will have a broader impact with regards to reducing motorised trips and showcase other ways to get around that are emissions free.

By giving people the opportunity to be active, reduce their reliance on the NHS since it will improve their well-being due to the exercise and the conviviality.

Steps to get it done:

  • Produce and distribute project publicity materials
  • Engage local social housing estates and organisations
  • Run 4 ‘roadshows’ at key locations in the borough ahead of the launch
  • Take 4-8 people out on cycle trips of their choice every week
  • Collect quantitative & qualitative data
  • Collect materials for case studies and project video
  • Publish project report
  • begin delivery in 2 additional locations

The project cycles are power assisted to enable riders to travel further and ride for longer in any road environment.

How will the Money be Used

The funding will be used to purchase a small fleet of these cycles for the project, to train and pay the ‘pilot’ and for development work linking to local social housing estates, care homes, dementia groups, older people’s networks and groups for the visually impaired.
