Residents, schools and community groups are being encouraged to host a ‘play street’ to mark World Car-Free Day next month.

Play Streets involve residents closing off their road for a few hours on a chosen day, so that children can play freely without the fear of traffic.

To mark World Car-Free Day, H&F Council will be hosting a ‘Car-Free Festival’ with events taking place on Friday 21 September and Saturday 22 September.

Grants for Remembrance Day Installations

Applications are now open for micro-grants of up to £500 for installations to support their Remembrance Day activities for the centenary of the First World War.

This programme will allow communities to remember and commemorate by accessing our silhouettes for benches and chairs free of charge thanks to the support of the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

These silhouettes can be placed within community halls, places of worship and places of education, bringing to mind those who went to war and did not return. You can apply for an award to purchase up to 10 silhouettes.

As part of the award, your organisation will need to hold a self-funded event to bring your local community together.

Applications are open until the 1st October 2018.

Who can apply for an award?

Your organisation cannot be a for profit/commercial organisation, but aside from that, pretty much anyone can apply, including:

  • A charity
  • A Community Interest Company (CIC)
  • A school
  • A place of worship
  • An Armed Forces base
  • A community organisation with a constitution and a community space (Including councils)

We formally launched the Freston Road Hub on Friday 17th August, with tea and cake on the terrace and a buzz of friendly visitors throughout the afternoon.  Guests met our current licensees and spent a relaxed few hours networking and chatting with likeminded people from a range of different organisations and backgrounds.

The hubs already attract an eclectic range of businesses including youth organisations, interior designers, IT companies, a hat designer, health care trainers, NHS partners and accountants.   IT consultant Derek White, of Banana IT Solutions, which has space at the Freston Road Hub said: “As a local resident and formerly a member of a local residents’ association, I’ve been involved in the development of this space for the last four years. It’s fantastic to finally see it open and to now be involved as a small business, making use of this amazing facility. I love that I can come and go as I please, and have space to hold meetings, deliver training and grow my business.”
