Business meeting

We will discuss the formal business required at an AGM – Carers Network’s annual and Treasurer’s reports, performance, achievements and plans for the future.

Speaker

We are very fortunate to have Roy Lilley as our speaker. Roy is a broadcaster, commentator, writer and journalist, focusing on the NHS and associated issues. Roy will be speaking on the future of the NHS, carers accessing the NHS and reflecting on his own experience of being a carer.

Participation 

We’ll finish the event with a dynamic African-Caribbean music and dance participatory workshop session with members of the Carl Campbell Recycled Teenagers’ 50+ dance programme. The session is geared towards improving mental and physical health and wellbeing and all those attending are welcome to join in with the workshop.

We’ll have mince pies to round off the event.

Influencing Change 2020: for London-based change-makers

Applications for the Sheila McKechnie Foundation’s flagship Influencing Change programme are now open.

The five-day training programme is for campaigners working in London who want to take their skills to the next level. Participants begin with a deep immersion in how social change is happening today, looking at key drivers and emerging trends. We will then cover how to design and activate a campaign, from planning to final evaluation. You’ll leave with new knowledge and tools, and the confidence and networks to help you make the change you seek. Participants will hear from leading thinkers and practitioners in the campaign community. Previous courses have featured campaigning heavyweights, such as No More Page 3, Shelter, Friends of the Earth, NSPCC, The Hillsborough Campaign and 38 degrees.

Third sector- Why The Changing Landscape Of EU Integration Matters To You

The experience of being European in the UK is changing: and so, therefore, is the role of the third sector in attending to the needs of our communities. But are we adapting adequately to the changing needs of our population?

Do we understand the potential implications of current changes on the groups we serve?

Join New Europeans and the Brexit Civil Society Alliance on November 19th from 4.30 – 7pm at City Hall for a discussion of key issues for Europeans – and therefore, for the third sector.

We will be touching on the EU Settlement Scheme; hate crime and discrimination; and representation and community cohesion. We will also be launching the results of New Europeans’ research on the preparedness of the sector to support clients accessing the Settlement Scheme (the survey is still open until November 6th – please participate here).

We are particularly interested in inviting organisations to who do not already work in the immigration, migrant integration or advice sectors. We want to share and explore how these issues affect the third sector as a whole.

Reducing Violent Crime: What Psychologists can contribute?

The DCP London Branch is keen to consider what psychologists can offer to help reduce violent crime in London and have put together an interesting event which brings together innovative psychological interventions to reducing violent crime.

 

We welcome local, community services and individuals to join the discussion and contribute to finding and co-creating solutions.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

Youth Mental Health First Aid Workshops Information

Mental health is just as important to our overall wellbeing as physical health, in some cases more so, yet we tend to pay far less attention to it. The mental health of young people is particularly important. Half of all long-term mental illness in adulthood starts by 15 and three quarters by 18.

 

Youth workers and coaches can do a great deal to prevent this, without being experts. We train to give physical first aid without hesitation – so why not mental first aid too?

 

Local authorities up and down the country see mental health as their top priority. They know that ignoring the problem is unaffordable because of the impact on the economy: young people with mental health problems find it harder to get or stay in work, they are more likely to get into legal trouble and will need more attention from their GP or hospital. Interventions, such as Mental Health First Aid, are both evidence-based and cost-effective.

 

Training your volunteers and coaches is money well spent and will allow your organisation to make a vital contribution to the health of the local population.

 

What Is It About?

Learners will explore the most common mental health conditions experienced by young people and discover what youth and sport workers can do to prevent and/or intervene when needed.  The ‘Lite’ version provides a taster of the content for the ‘Full’ course.  Learners on the full course cover topics such as child and adolescent development, bullying and cyber bullying, substance misuse and protective factors.

 

Learners will be able to:

  • challenge the discrimination surrounding mental health
  • define mental health & common issues
  • relate to other people’s experiences
  • look after their own mental health
  • protect a young person who may be at risk
  • spot the signs of mental health issues in young people
  • give help, support and guidance to any young person who needs it
