Who Cares for Our Carers? Event

Help Like Minded explore they can support North West London’s carers on Monday 25th April from 17:00 – 21:30 in Hammersmith.

Carers and the community play a central role in the new Mental Health strategy for NW London.

What impact will the changes to how all people with mental health needs are supported have on the lives of those who care for them, on their homes and on their families? Is there a strategy to support those who do the caring?

We are delighted to invite you to join Like Minded and West London Collaborative whilst we use forum theatre discussions to ask Who cares about the carers?

Milson Road Health Centre Co-Design Workshop

Membership Engagement Services  have been appointed by Hammersmith & Fulham Clinical Commissioning Group  to facilitate a co-design workshop on the future use of Milson Road Health Centre (1-13 Milson Road, W14 0LJ) and would like to invite you to the Co-design workshop.

When: Thursday 14 April, 6pm-9pm

Where: Masbro Centre, 87 Masbro Road, London, W14 0LR

The co-design approach looks to involve all stakeholders in the design process of what the future of Milson Road could look like. It is hoped that this will ensure that the Health Centre meets the needs of the local and wider community providing a long-term, locally designed solution to a local issue.

Community Cardio-Respiratory service – live from 1st April 2016

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) has been commissioned by H&F CCG to provide an innovative new integrated Community Cardiology and Respiratory service (hearts and lungs) across the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. This new service commenced on the 1st April 2016, replacing the outgoing community Respiratory service run by CLCH.

The Community Cardiology and Respiratory Service is a multi-disciplinary service for all patients within the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The key principle of the service will be joint working, with the service operating as an integrated Cardiology and Respiratory service.  It will provide regular joint clinics to diagnose patients, multidisciplinary team case reviews, and joint or co-located community clinics at the same time to provide joined-up care for patients with breathlessness, and/or more than one heart or lung problem.  The service consists of consultants, specialist nurses, clinical psychologists, specialist physiotherapists, physiologists and administrators. They offer advice, consultation, assessment and management of heart and lung symptoms and diseases.

‘Opening Doors’ is a new project and the post holder will be expected to set up and manage the project which will involve recruiting, training, matching of volunteers.

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual with excellent skills in volunteer management, supervision and support. The post holder will need to be proactive and be a good communicator.  Organisational skills, as well as an ability to work to targets are essential for this role. Experience of working with people with learning disabilities would be an advantage but is not essential.

Organisation Support Officer – 21 hours a week – £26,000 pro rata

One Westminster is looking for someone with an excellent understanding of the voluntary sector and an interest in “social prescription” and the “self-care” health agenda to join our small Organisation Support Team.

Working alongside colleagues, you will be responsible for delivering a range of support, signposting and development services to voluntary and community organisations in Westminster.  You will provide a link between National Health Service and other statutory health and well-being providers and the wider voluntary sector and help develop self-care services within the sector.

You should have excellent communication skills, experience of project development and management including monitoring and evaluation and evidence experience and knowledge of fundraising and bid writing.

A knowledge of the current health agenda would be an advantage.

This is a one year fixed term contract.

Volunteer Outreach Officer

One Westminster is looking for someone with an excellent understanding of the voluntary sector and experience in managing volunteers to support the Volunteer Outreach and Development Service.  The main aim of this role is to engage with the harder to reach groups in the Westminster community and support them into volunteering placements. Targeted groups include unemployed people, young people in education, older people aged 65 plus, homeless people and those recovering from substance misuse. 

A key part will be supporting customers in 1-to-1 sessions at outreach work throughout Westminster, including Job Centres, to find their ideal volunteering role with voluntary organisations and community groups, based on interests and skills using the Team Westminster website.

The role will also include providing ongoing support, monitoring and tracking all registered customers to assist them into successful volunteering placements.

This is a part time post for one year.

Hours:                         17.5 hours per week/2.5 days per week

Spacehive Crowdfunding

Spacehive is a crowdfunding platform with a purpose: to make it as easy as possible for as many people as possible to bring their civic environment to life.

Whether you want to transform a playground, bring an old building back to life, spruce up a park, or create something completely new, Spacehive aims to help people to attract support for projects that make places distinctive, lively and loved.

Crowdfunding is appealing to trusts and charities, and has the potential to generate a wide variety of local match-funding opportunities. Islington-based charity, Octopus, is currently using Spacehive to fundriase to buy a milk float and transform it into a ‘Gro-Mobile’ so that they can get into parts of Islington their Urban Wild Places project cannot effectively reach.

When people pledge to a project, through Spacehive, it might be the biggest indication that they want it to happen. This is a very powerful message when trying to get other organisations on board with the idea.

Experience from elsewhere shows that people who pledge to projects really do feel like they made it happen. They have a sense of ownership over the project and often become ambassadors for them.

As crowdfunding projects are public, local businesses and larger organisations like to be involved too and will often pledge or offer support.

​Abolition of National Insurance Contributions by employers for apprentices under 25

From 6 April 2016 employers of apprentices aged under 25 years old shall be exempt from payment of secondary Class 1 (employers) National Insurance contributions on earnings up to the Upper Earnings Limit for those employees, which is currently £827.00 per week or £43,000 per year. The change effects apprenticeships falling within the relevant statutory framework for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; and evidence between the employer, apprentice and training provider is required for employers wishing to apply for the relief. Alternatively, in England and Wales, proof of government funding of the apprenticeship may be regarded as sufficient evidence of the same.

​Compulsory National Living Wage effective from 1 April 2016

From 1 April 2016 a National Living Wage of £7.20 per hour for workers aged 25 and over is set to be introduced. Entitlement to the National Living Wage will include not only employees and workers, but also apprentices aged 25 and over, casual labourers and agricultural workers. The Low Pay Commission will recommend any future rise to the rate, but it is anticipated that the National Living Wage will rise to £9.00 or over by 2020.

The National Living Wage differs from the ‘Living Wage’, which is assessed in accordance with the basic cost of living in the UK, and which employers can voluntarily choose to pay. This rate is currently £9.40 per hour in London and £8.25 for the rest of the UK.

The National Minimum Wage will remain in force for workers under the age of 25, and will continue to be updated on 1st October every year.

Worker complaints of underpayment must be brought to the employee in the first instance. However, if the employer continues to refuse payment workers can advance their complaint to ACAS to seek resolution, or HMRC. Failure to pay employees the correct rate of pay will result in penalties being levied against the employer and this will be up to 200% or double the value of the underpayment owed, unless the full amount owed to the employee or worker is paid within 14 days.

The maximum fine for non-payment will be £20,000 per worker and failure to pay could result in an employer being banned from being a company director for up to 15 years.

The Employment Tribunal has recently considered the case of Gareddu v London Underground, in which an employee had claimed that it was discriminatory for his employer to refuse him 5 consecutive weeks’ annual leave during the summer for him to attend a series of religious festivals with his family in Italy.

In this case, the Tribunal decided that there was no mandatory requirement for the claimant to attend the series of festivals amounting to individual events, nor was there a close enough link between his religious beliefs as a roman catholic, and the need to attend the festivals over a consecutive 5 week period. The claimant himself conceded that his wish to attend could have been met by the holiday being taken in blocks over a similar period.

Although employees do not have an automatic right to time off for religious reason, employers should accommodate requests for annual leave to cover religious occasions where it is reasonable to do so.

In-keeping with the position taken by the Courts, employers should refuse a request only where it has a legitimate business need that can be objectively justified. Where it is not possible to grant an employee’s original request, the employer should discuss the options with the employee as it may be possible to come to a compromise. For example, the employee may agree to a reduced period, or to take unpaid time off.

Employers should be mindful of whether their policies, criteria or practices relating to holiday entitlement may be detrimental to staff requiring flexibility in order to engage in their religious practices as this might amount to indirect discrimination.
