The countdown is on for Carers Week 2016!

This year’s focus is on building Carer Friendly Communities; communities which support carers to look after their family or friends well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own.

To celebrate Carers Week we have a busy week of activities for Hammersmith and Fulham carers.

To book on to events and trips please call 020 8960 3033 / email info@carers-network.co.uk

Monday 6 June we kick off the week with a trip to Chiswick House at 1.30pm. We will be able to provide free entry to the house – then, after your visit you can enjoy the gardens.

Tuesday 7 June we’ll be exploring The Thames on a River Cruise. We have a number of tickets available which enable
you to hop on and off the boats as many times as you like during the day. We’ll be meeting at Westminster Pier at 11am
where you can collect your ticket and we’ll depart on the 11.30am boat to Greenwich.

Wednesday 8 June we’ll be celebrating Carers Network’s 25th birthday in style, at the Beethoven Centre, W10 4JL.
Come along to join in the fun from 1pm. There’ll be tea and cake and Carers Time Bank members will be demonstrating
their skills – we’ll also be inaugurating the Great Beethoven Carers Bake Off!

Thursday 9 June we will have Advice and Wellbeing Workshops at the Mencap Centre, 65 Aspenlea Road, W6
8LH from 10.30am – 3.30pm. This will include a number of interactive workshops and a light lunch will be provided.

Friday 10 June finally – and like the River Cruise, back by popular demand – we will be organising a guided tour of
The Houses of Parliament. The group will be meeting at Westminster tube station at 9.30am for a 10am tour.

Booking on to Carers Weeks Events

  • Tickets for River Cruise and Houses of Parliament tour are prioritised on a first come first served basis for carers who did not go on these trips last year.
  • To ensure as many carers as possible have the chance to be involved, carers will only be able to book onto one of either the River Cruise, Houses of Parliament tour or trip to Chiswick House.

Job Description

The Charity Commission will today  (23/05/2016) open a consultation on its new power to disqualify trustees, which the government has revealed will come into force in July.

On Friday, the Cabinet Office released its timetable for bringing the Charities (Protection and Social Investment) Act into force, which says there will be a consultation on the regulator’s new power to disqualify trustees it deems likely to damage the reputation of a charity. The commission said the consultation would be opened today.

The timetable says the commission’s new power to issue warnings for low or medium-level concerns that do not warrant a full statutory inquiry would be available from October.

The power to disqualify will allow the commission to remove trustees and prevent them from holding further board or senior management positions at charities if they have been responsible for or aware of misconduct or mismanagement at a charity, but also if the commission deems any past or continuing behaviour to be likely to damage public trust in charities.

The power has been criticised by sector leaders and groups as too broad and allowing the commission too much discretion.

Up to 10 tickets per community group are available. Tickets will be distributed on a first come first serve basis

Val works the toilets in Pleasure, a hedonistic gay club in the north of England. For years, she has been a shoulder to cry on and a confidante – much loved but viewed as an enigma. Why is she still there? Why does she never leave? When a young man, both beautiful and unpredictable, arrives from the city and leaves a gift for Val – performed in this premiere production by the well-known British soprano Lesley Garrett – it marks the start of a passionate and violent night.

Born in Liverpool in 1988, composer Mark Simpson won BBC Young Musician of the Year as a clarinettist in 2006 and also, that same year, received the accolade of BBC Young Composer of the Year – the only individual to have won both competitions. In 2010 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Award, and he has a growing catalogue of works to his credit, including his orchestral scores A Mirror Fragment and Threads (both 2008) as well as sparks (2012), which have all been well received. Most recently his oratorio The Immortal was performed to acclaim at the Manchester International Festival. Here he turns to opera for the first time; his librettist is long-time collaborator Melanie Challenger, whose poetry and prose have been widely admired.
