H&F Community Aid Network (CAN)

H&F CAN is the volunteer community aid network launched by Hammersmith & Fulham Council to support residents in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Working with the voluntary and charity sector, and alongside the ward and street-level mutual aid groups, H&F CAN offers support to residents who don’t have friends or family close by to help them. Our taskforce of volunteers will help those most in need at the time of their greatest need.

Do you need urgent support with food, loneliness or isolation?

Or are you worried about a friend, neighbour or relative?

The National Lottery Community Fund and The Ubele Initiative, on behalf of the Phoenix Way Partners, has announced a new £50 million partnership to boost funding and support to black and minoritised community-led charities and grassroots groups across England. The ‘Phoenix Way’ will create a series of national and regional panels from leaders from black and minoritised communities who will work with the National Lottery Fund to identify the challenges faced by those with lived experience of racism and racial dipartites, and award funding to charities and grassroots groups best placed to help their communities thrive. The programme will be designed and developed over the summer, with the aim of awarding funding for the next five years from autumn 2021. Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) provide crucial support to expert clinicians in a variety of health areas and settings.  HCSW roles often have different names such as Healthcare Assistant but are all great roles which provide a range of experiences to the person in the role.  This could be working with patients, carers, and clinicians, as well as carrying out basic clinical procedures such as blood pressure or using community-based approaches in family support worker roles.  Many staff stay in their HCSW role for many years or move into different HCSW roles, while others use it as a stepping-stone to other roles as the HCSW provides a good grounding in NHS services.

The link below has a 56 second video showing a few different roles that exist and also provides information about what is needed to become a HCSW.  Most roles require good literacy and numeracy skills and the training that will be provided such as the Care Certificate.  Health volunteering experiences can also be a route into HCSW roles.  The skills and experiences people have from existing roles and volunteering may be valuable to the NHS and help in applications and in carrying out HCSW roles.
