The following information was taken from the UK Civil Society Almanac 2019:

  • £22.9 billion was raised directly from the public during 2016/17
  • £15.8 billion was given by the Government
  • £4.8 billion was given by the voluntary sector in the form of Grants
  • £2.5 billion was given by the private sector

And,

  • £0.5 billion was given by The National Lottery.

Organisations with an income of over £1 million are fewer in numbers but account for more than 80% of the sectors income. Consequently, it is these larger organisations that continue to grow.

That said there has been growth in income driven by grants between 2001 and 2017 whereas monies overall coming from Government have plateaued.

So hooray to Grant funders!

And, monies from local government have also been falling while income from central government has grown slightly.

At Z2K, we have a well-established tribunals project, which gives us the capacity to represent around 500 people a year at tribunal. Since 2016, we have seen an increase in the numbers of disabled and unwell Londoners coming to Z2K for help with their disability and sickness benefits that have been stopped by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Our fully co-ordinated scheme connects pro bono lawyers from nine different law firms to low income Londoners who are in need of tribunal representation when they are denied their disability benefits – Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Goodgym Hammersmtih & Fulham runners meet every Tuesday evening to run together to a local good cause and lend a helping hand.  We have been painting school rooms, tidying community gardens, sorting clothing donations and litter picking in Hammersmith & Fulham for three and a half years now.  We are always on the look out for more Tuesday evening tasks for us to take on – and with our volunteer numbers exponentially growing we are now often carrying out two tasks in an evening.  If you have a task there are two dozen GoodGym volunteers ready to help in the borough.

To request a task, please email bethn@goodgym.org (our coordinator and run leader for Hammersmith and Fulham Goodgym).

The well-known saying ‘it’s tough at the top’ rings true for charity chief executives whose organisations face financial deficits, low morale and overstretched services. The CEOs responsible for giving a new lease of life to The Brain CharitySt John’s Hospice and Autism Together offer their top tips for getting the job done effectively

1. Be Brave
You need to be prepared to be unpopular to get things done, says the CEO of The Brain Charity, Nanette Mellor, who was appointed to plug the organisation’s financial hole. “The last thing you need to think about is being liked by anybody. If you start to worry about trying to please everybody, then you’re going to start to make the wrong decisions.”
