This will be H&F Council’s third annual awards celebrating those individuals and organisations who give their time to help to enrich the lives of others in the borough.  This year, we are looking for nominations in the following categories:

  • Most dedicated volunteer
  • Bringing people together
  • Community organiser
  • Acts of compassion
  • Contributions to art, culture or heritage
  • Contributions to health and well-being
  • Improving our environment
  • Lifetime achievement

You can nominate anyone who lives, works, studies or volunteers in the borough, or any community or voluntary group or organisation.  All nominations will be put before a panel of judges and the finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in early June (exact date and venue tbc), at which the winners will be announced.

Visit the story on the council website for more information, a link to the nomination form – and also to see the video from last year’s awards event at the town hall.

If you know someone who deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication, nominate them now!  Nominations close on Monday 9th March 2020.

We would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year – and a new decade to boot!  Many of you will have seen the ‘10 year challenge’ which is doing the rounds on social media, with people posting photographs of themselves – one current and one from a decade ago.  This provided a number of opportunities for people to share sometimes strange, often funny photographs – with many looking better at the beginning of 2020 than they did in 2010!  However, it got me thinking that an interesting moment might be given to comparing what we, as an organisation, look like today compared to 10 years ago! What would your organisation’s 10 Year challenge look like?

Freston Road Hub is an enterprise hub, managed by Sobus (a Fulham based charity), and supported by our Landlords, Peabody Housing Trust and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. Our aim is to support local enterprise – through the provision of affordable office and meeting room space, as well as through access to training and support. To see a list of forthcoming activities, RBKC news and useful resources, click here.

Please take a look at this article and YouTube link. It is about Bubble and Squeak and produced by Echo Friends, both of which registered with Sobus. It’s really great to see Echo Friends finding its way after lots of discussion and thought and this could be something to help groups share their successes ….

We all need to take a short break from shopping for gifts and think about some of the problems occurring this time of the year. We particularly talk about food waste and social isolation, but this time we don’t focus only on the negative part, we are here to show you an inspiring story of young food waste warriors tackling these issues in their local communities

We’ve just produced our first video for our first charity, Bubble & Squeak, and our mission is to be able to produce story videos that will raise the profile of the groups we can help, and (especially) create, at the least, an initial new funding round – but we want our videos to be more than just one-off appeals; we want to create cornerstone (legacy) content that a charity can use for months if not years.

It is my pleasure to invite you to watch our video, and if you’ve any thoughts about it (http://bit.ly/food_waste_warriors), it would be great to hear them.

Also please help us to amplify the voices of these amazing young Changemakers by Sharing the video with your Friends, Family and Colleagues; that would be an invaluable help for us to “#SpreadTheWorld“.

After the results of the general election, the UK will almost certainly leave the European Union on 31 January 2020. Over the coming year, senior charity staff and Boards are going to need to keep watch on a range of areas where Brexit is likely to have an impact.

There will be a transitional period from 31 January to 31 December 2020. During this period, charities will need to give careful thought to the potential impact of Brexit on some key areas.  Those that stand out include:There will be a transitional period from 31 January to 31 December 2020. During this period, charities will need to give careful thought to the potential impact of Brexit on some key areas.  Those that stand out include:

funding – there may be some protection for existing European funding in the Withdrawal Agreement, but charities will need to consider the likely loss of European funding streams further down the line.

contracts and agreements – many will contain references to EU law, which will need to be amended before the end of the transition period.

trademarks/intellectual property – those with trademarks registered with the European Intellectual Property Office will need to track the impact of the changes.

data transfer – charities may need to review how personal data is transferred to and from charities, partners and suppliers in the EU, and may need to take additional steps to ensure continued compliance with data protection legislation.

staff – while EU staff will have until 30 June 2021 to apply to the Home Office for settled status, support and advice may be needed, particularly for those employees who leave the UK to work overseas for periods of time.

supply chains – an understanding of what goods you use that may be disrupted by the end of the free movement of goods will be key to maintaining continuity of supply.

We will be talking about Brexit planning at our ‘Getting in shape for 2020’ seminar on 28 January 2020. If you would like to hear more, sign up to receive our charity law seminar invitations – sign up for events & updates.

We will continue to monitor developments and will be publishing further updates and guidance in due course – keep an eye on our Charity law e-updates.

We live in a rapidly changing world with digital technologies influencing the way we shop, travel and communicate with our loved ones. Often, we lose sight of the fact that there are still a lot of older people who are digitally excluded. Too often this can cause older people to miss out on services and financial benefits they are entitled to.

Therefore, at Fulham Good Neighbours we are running the second year of our Digital Inclusion project. By matching volunteers with local older people who wish to learn how to use laptops, smartphones and the Internet, we aim to tackle isolation in our local community.  If you know someone who could benefit from a friendly meeting and one-to-one lessons on how to use the Internet, please contact us at info@fulhamgoodneighbours.org or call 020 7385 8850.

We are also looking for more volunteers who could spare a couple of hours a month to support an older person. If this could be you or someone you know, please visit our website www.fulhamgoodneighbours.org and contact us for more details.
