We are happy to welcome you to The London History Festival again this year, despite the strange times we are living in – this time we are inviting you to join us virtually, from the comfort of your own home. This literary festival aims to bring the work of the finest historians to the widest possible audience.

Established in 2009 and hosted by Kensington Central Library each November, the Festival enables you to engage with some of today’s most popular and most highly regarded historians. This year we are putting on eight evening talks with eight wonderful authors presenting their latest books, in a programme of virtual events we hope will both entertain and enlighten you. So why not come along, this is a real treat for all history buffs!

Monday 16 November to Thursday 26 November 2020. Find out more here

The grants programme is for Black, Asian and Minority (BAME) led community groups and organisations in England, working primarily with BAME communities, with an annual income of less than £200,000. All grant awards will be in the region of £5,000 to £10,000. Find out more.

The Photojournalism Hub has been awarded funding from W12Together to run a project for youths (16+) in White City and Wormholt starting from the 7th November.

Following on the success of the JustZine magazine (see all the issues on the site) produced with youths in White City, I am very pleased to continue to offer this incredible opportunity where participants will, under the guidance of a professional media facilitator, produce and publish their work in an online news zine covering local stories in the community of White City and Wormholt.  The project will equip participants with a working portfolio, mentorship and working experience in the publishing and creative industry that can assist them in gaining access to further education and/or work placements. I would love to reach out to as many youths as possible in the local area.

Register to the project here

Funding is available to small BAME led organisations providing support to people in their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three levels of grant are available from £500 to £10,000. Funding can support core costs, capital costs and project/engagement activities. The application deadline is midnight on 30th October 2020. Find out more here.

There will be guaranteed changes from 1 January for businesses as we start our new relationship with the EU, and there are many actions you can take today to prepare. Find out what you need to do by visiting gov.uk/transition and using the checker tool.

I know these are challenging times, however it is vital that your business prepares now for our new relationship with the EU, outside of the single market and customs union.

There are 80 days until the end of the transition period and there will be no extension, so you need to act now.

Regardless of whether we reach a trade agreement with the EU, from 1 January there will be guaranteed changes to:

  • the way businesses import and export goods;
  • the process for hiring people from the EU; and
  • the way businesses provide services in EU markets.

Help is available, and as Business Secretary, I encourage you to:

  1. Check what actions you need to take by visiting uk/transition.
  2. Sign-up for updates.
  3. Attend government webinars for additional support, you can sign up to attend BEIS webinars now.

Unless you take action, there is a risk business operations will be interrupted. You should also check with your suppliers and customers that they are taking action.

Businesses will play an essential role in ensuring a smooth end to the transition period, and the government and I will be there to support you as we embark on the UK’s new start.

Yours Sincerely,

Alok Sharma

Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
