We’re hopefully moving out of the social lockdown, but vital services that charities provide to people up and down the country are still under threat. During the COVID19 pandemic the public, philanthropy and government have responded with extra support – but is it enough?

That’s why the #NeverMoreNeeded campaign has launched a new website to help communicate the message and champion the vital role the charity sector plays to improve people’s lives. On the site you’ll find briefings, research and actions you can do today to help – like template letters for writing to your MP – so check it out!

Want to volunteer, gain experience, and help charities to earn income that supports vital services? Maybe you know someone who might? The Charity Retail Association (CRA) has launched a new initiative to match potential volunteers with charity shops when they reopen on or after 15 June.

Interested members of the public can sign up online to volunteer in a very simple and short process. CRA hope that young people in particular will put themselves forward, as many older volunteers could remain shielded for some time.

Charity retailers with vacancies will also be able to search a database and identify potential volunteers according to their location and specific charity interest. Find out more.

During the week Carers Network will run a virtual programme of activities for local carers. See the full programme for the week here.

On Monday 8 June our CEO Sally Miller will be hosting a Welcome to the Week Zoom at 11am. She will be joined by carers, local councillors, commissioners from council and the Carers Network team. If you would like to join us there to find out what we have scheduled for the week and meet local unpaid carers there. The Zoom link is here, Meeting ID: 876 9997 2562 Password: 588752

The theme for this year’s week is ’Making Caring Visible’ to ensure that carers get the information and support they need from services and the wider public. Unpaid carers are currently dealing with more challenges than ever before, with the pandemic having done a lot to hide carers, confining them to their homes more and making them less visible. This makes it more important than ever that we come together to recognise the role played by unpaid carers, ensuring they are valued and well-supported.

If you follow us on social media please do share links and help us publicise our campaign to make caring visible over the week on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

We would like to offer you the chance to sign up to an online peer support session, offered by our partners at The Institute for Voluntary Action Research (IVAR). You can sign up for your first session heredates are currently available up to the end of June.

These 90 minute sessions, for up to 10 voluntary sector leaders at a time, will give you the opportunity to explore and discuss the challenges you are currently experiencing, precipitated by the COVID-19 outbreak. We understand that you may be facing huge stress and uncertainty, and hope that these sessions will offer a space to share experiences, dilemmas and worries.

One leader who has already taken part commented that: “It was really powerful to be part of one of these sessions … incredible to hear about the wide range of experiences and challenges faced by colleagues and to identify together commonality within that diversity.”

As a by-product of this work, IVAR will also feedback to funders the kinds of challenges that voluntary sector organisations are currently facing. This will help funders to think about what kind of support they need to be offering, and how.

If you are unable to attend, but would like to be kept informed about future dates please email vanessa@ivar.org.uk.
