Funding for Arts Projects that Work with Children and Young People

Not for profit organisations in the arts and cultural sector can apply for grants of up to £50,000 for projects that work with children and young people up to the age of 18 using the arts and creative media.

Preference will be given to innovative projects which have a deep commitment to listening to children and allow the perceptions and feelings of children themselves to be better understood. Organisations can apply for both one-off short-term projects and for projects lasting up to three years. The funding is being made available through the Ragdoll Foundation’s Open Grant Scheme.

Previous projects supported include;

  • Dance Devon, who received a grant of £20,550 to develop and deliver ‘All Aboard’, a new inclusive dance project for very young disabled and non-disabled children and their families
  • West Yorkshire Playhouse which received a grant of £26,028 to develop and deliver a new arts-based creative play project with around 30 babies, toddlers and pre-school children whose mothers attend the Playhouse’s weekly Asmarina Voices refugee women’s singing group.

Funding to Support Disadvantaged Pupils in State Schools

The John Lyon’s Charity has announced that its Schools in Partnership Fund is open for applications.

Through the programme, the charity is making grants of between £25,000 and £50,000 to groups of state schools (in partnership with local voluntary organisations where appropriate) for projects aimed at supporting their most challenged pupils, strengthening links with home life and coordinating the support of other available professionals.

The funding is available to schools in Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea and the Cities of London and Westminster.

Previous projects supported include;

  • St Anselm’s RC Catholic Primary School which received a grant of £38,000 for a play therapy project with four other schools
  • the Catholic Children’s Society (Westminster)
  • Kingsbury High School which received a grant of £15,000 for a psychotherapy project with Brent Centre for Young People.

The Schools in Partnership Fund has a two stage application procedure. The Trustee meets in March, June and November. Proposals should be received by the Grants Team at least four months before.

Funding for Projects that Tackle the Root Causes of Social Inequity (UK)

Not for profit organisations that work towards a just and democratic society and to redress political and social injustices can apply for grants of between £1,000 and £5,000.

The funding is available to causes outside the mainstream that are unlikely to receive funding from other sources.

Examples of projects funded in the past include;

  • The Boaz Trust a Christian organisation serving destitute asylum seekers in Greater Manchester which received a grant of £2,000;
  • The Grandparents Association in Leeds which received a grant of £4,800.

The funding is made through the Scurrah Wainright Charity and the next closing date for applications is the 14th January 2019.

Hilden Charitable Fund Announces Next Application Deadline (UK)

The Hilden Charitable Fund is open for applications. Within the UK, the Hilden Charitable Fund makes grants to projects that address disadvantage, notably by supporting causes which are less popular. In particular, the Fund wants to support projects that address homelessness; supports asylum seekers and refugees; support community based initiatives for disadvantaged young people 16 – 25; and penal affairs. The average grant awarded is £5,000 and preference is given to supporting small community organisations with an income of less than £500,000 per year. The Trust will consider funding project as well as core running costs of organisations. The fund also makes grants for projects in developing countries; working on community development, education, and health. Trustees will particularly welcome projects that address the needs and potential of girls and women. Trustees will be pleased to hear from UK Non Governmental Organisations/charities and hope that UK NGOs/charities will encourage their local partners to apply directly to Hilden for grant aid. The next closing date for applications is the 19th December 2018.

Masonic Charitable Foundation Re-opens Grants Programme to Support Disadvantaged and Vulnerable Older People (England and Wales)

Local and national charities in England and Wales can apply to the Later Life Grant programme run by the Masonic Charitable Foundation. The Later Life Grant programme is open to charities working to reduce loneliness and isolation of vulnerable and disadvantaged people over 50. The Later Life Grant programme offers both small grants of between £500 and £10,000 to charities with an income of below £500,000 and grants of between £10,000 and £150,000 to charities with an annual income of above £500,000 for projects that support disadvantaged and vulnerable older people over 50 years. The small grants programme is currently closed for applications and the closing date for applications to the large grants programme is 5pm on the 2nd January 2019 for stage 1 application to the large grants programme.

Nationwide Community Grants is looking for local housing projects that will strengthen your local community under the following themes:

  • supporting the most vulnerable
  • finding new approaches to increasing the supply of housing
  • reinventing renting for both tenants and landlords

MOPAC Victims Fund is open to organisations providing support to victims of crime to help them cope and recover from their experience.

BBC Children in Need Emergency Essentials Programme (UK)

The BBC Children in Need Emergency Essentials Programme which supports children and young people up to the age of 18 living with severe poverty as well as additional pressures such as domestic violence, disability or poor health in the family is currently open for applications from referral organisations that will be able to apply for grants on behalf of families or young people.

The fund will cover the purchase of critical items such as gas or electric cookers and other essential household items. The referrer’s organisation should also be able to administer and supervise the grant on behalf of the BBC Children in Need Emergency Essentials Programme.

All applications must be made by a registered referrer.

Grants for School Expeditions and Fieldwork (UK)

Frederick Soddy Schools Award Banner

Secondary schools across the UK and Ireland schools that are planning expeditions and fieldwork can apply for grants of £200 to £600 towards the costs of the trip. Preference is given to projects that involve a strong element of human geography and those that take place within the United Kingdom and Ireland. The next deadline to apply is the 18th January 2019 and the funding is offered by the Frederick Soddy Schools Award through the Royal Geographic Society.

Heart of the Community Fund – Virgin Money Foundation

Here at the Virgin Money Foundation, we’re on a mission to support community regeneration by backing people who can make big changes happen locally.

We love helping local communities thrive so every two months, we’re giving three local charities the chance to win £1,000 – with awards of £500 and £250 for the two runners-up.

The awards will go to the charities with the most votes from Virgin Money customers and Lounge members.

We’d love to support projects:

  • Run by smaller local registered charities. That means annual running costs of less than £500,000
  • Working in the parts of Inner London that need money the most
  • With strong local roots
  • Benefiting the wider community

Funds can be used to buy materials and equipment, make improvements to a community building or sports facility, clean up an area of wasteland or support an event. The money could also pay for staff to run an activity.

Grow Wild – Funding Opportunity from Royal Botanic Gardens

Grow Wild is awarding grants of £2,000 or £4,000 to groups across the UK to deliver projects in their community focused on UK native wildflowers, plants and fungi.

Grants are being made to group and projects in the UK that are working toward a number of objectives including (but not limited to) working with young people; communities in urban areas and focussing on UK native flora.
