Danny Barnes, the Chief Executive of Acknowledging Youths has been using the services of Sobus for the last two years developing his network across H&F. Danny says, “We are a pioneer socially responsible recruitment service that bridges the gap between ethical companies with strong corporate responsibility concerns and motivated, trained young professionals coming from a disadvantaged background.
We are focused on candidates coming from a disadvantaged background that have already started their journey into employability by completing the training and mentoring programmes at Acknowledging Youths CIC – an award-winning Community Interest Company (CIC) founded on 2012 and focused on delivering high-quality professional training, coaching and mentoring programmes to young people and adults coming from disadvantage background. AY Group –  the “one stop shop” place when you think of reducing unemployment among young people and adults.” Sobus has recently supported Danny with his mentoring project Time for Change.

We now have a date in place for our next meeting –  Wednesday 8th November at 11am in Hammersmith Town Hall, Committee Room 1 (2nd Floor). The primary subject of this meeting will be Hammersmith and Fulham’s forthcoming bid in the London Borough of Culture Competition.
This new competition invites all of the 32 London boroughs to apply for funding to lead a game changing cultural programme. Two winning boroughs will be named London Borough of Culture, one in 2019 and one in 2020 and up to six other boroughs will receive support to deliver bespoke cultural projects.
The meeting will be hosted by Jon Gilchrist who is leading Hammersmith and Fulham’s bid and will be joined by Donna Pentelow, Head of Culture. An agenda will be circulated nearer the time detailing some of our plans for the bid and how members of the network can get involved.

Please confirm your attendance with Thomas Dodd | Arts Development Office on Thomas.Dodd@lbhf.gov.uk

We have today published a new strategy for how we’ll engage with the public to help make us a strong, independent regulator that is always on the side of people using care services.
We engaged lots of people, including people who use services, organisations that represent them and our staff in its creation.

We heard the following challenges:

  • CQC can’t do this alone and in some cases, are not best placed to do so – we should leverage what others do well in the system.
  • People, and organisations, do not always know what happens when they share views and experiences of care with us.
  • The public struggle to find the information they need about care services. They are not always seeing our ratings.
  • People do not always know what changes their feedback or participation has led to.
  • The “public” are not a homogeneous group – they are diverse and have many needs. Over the next five years, these needs and the way people use health and care services will change.

We will address these challenges by:

  • Working with organisations that represent people who use services to help improve the quality of care.
  • Encouraging people to share their views and experiences of care with us, improving the way we use this information and reporting on the action we take.
  • Producing and promoting simple, clear and concise information for the public that explains what good care looks like and supports people to make decisions about services.
  • Improving the way we work by involving and engaging the public in our policies, plans and processes.

Thank you to those who helped us to develop our new strategy. We look forward to working with you to turn it into reality over the coming years.

You can download the summary version of the strategy here.

The strategy is also available in Easy Read and Large Print.

You can also read the strategy in Bengali, Chinese, Gujurati, Polish, Punjabi and Urdu..

The clock is ticking – the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) comes into force 25th May 2018.

The GDPR applies to any organisation working in the EU that handles personal data. Personal data is any data you hold about individuals that can identify them, even if they are company email addresses. It could be data about customers, prospects, staff, volunteers, donors, suppliers… the list is endless. And it still applies post-Brexit.
You will have heard the stories about huge new fines, and maybe you think that becoming compliant is overwhelming. Learning about what is in the GDPR and how it applies to your organisation is the first step to make it manageable.
These two workshops can be taken on a single day or you can come to only one session depending how much you already know about GPPR or how far you are in your compliance plan. The content has been tailored for smaller organisations

Morning session An introduction to GDPR
Registration 9-9:30 – Finishing approx. 12:30
This session will get you up to speed on the new data protection requirements, helping you understand the concepts and terminology of data protection and GDPR.

Afternoon Session Plan for GDPR Compliance

It is a chicken and egg situation for newly established groups. On the one hand having something new, needed and different  to develop to which it would seem likely that funding will be made available and, on the other hand, funders not wishing to give monies to groups that have not proved themselves over a period of time.  And with that funders often only prefer to listen to groups that have received funding before which can be sole destroying for the group in question, if they do not have  a history of fundraising.

Focus West London is one of those groups. Focus West London is a Hammersmith-based, volunteer-led community group providing a Saturday club for autistic children aged 3-11 years, and a programme of family support. Children are supported, one-to-one, by volunteer therapists trained in the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (“ABA”) which is an evidence-based, highly-effective behavioural intervention. Children learn vital, fundamental play, social and language/communications skills in a fun, nurturing and child-centred environment. So how did they raise their monies?
As a new group to the area Focus sought out Sobus for advice but being a newly formed group struggled with the chicken and egg situation. Sobus then introduced Focus to Localgoiving.

Who are Localgiving?
Localgiving is a charity itself and it supports local charitable organisations to diversify their income through online fundraising. They provide tools, training and advice to help local groups connect with supporters online, improve their digital skills and develop practical fundraising experience. Localgiving are also a leading advocate for the sector and work to raise awareness and support for local groups from the public, government and businesses.  Localgiving effectively helped Focus West London to establish a presence on their website and from there money was raised.

What is happening now with Focus West London?
Focus can be found on the localgiving site at https://localgiving.org/charity/focuswestlondon/  and yes they have raised money totalling £11,000 already!
And whatever the money raised the process in itself shows commitment and proves that members of the public understand the charitable need. This now puts Focus West London in a stronger position to seek support from grant funders…..
